Two more join Disney’s “Into the Woods”

Disney’s Into the Woods has added Tammy Blanchard and Billy Magnussen to its cast. The Tony Award-nominated stage actress and Nightcrawler actor will join the eagerly anticipated film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s hit Broadway musical, which boasts an all-star cast including Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep. Magnussen will replace Jake Gyllenhaal in the film as the love interest to fairytale character Rapunzel, while Blanchard has been lined up to play Florinda – one of Cinderella’s evil stepsisters. Gyllenhaal had signed on for a role in the film alongside Star Trek Into Darkness hunk Chris Pine, but dropped out of the movie due to a scheduling conflict last week.
The Rob Marshall-directed film centres on a childless baker, to be played by James Corden, and his wife – played by Emily Blunt – who venture into the forest to find the witch who put a curse on them. Along the way, the pair cross paths with a host of fairytale favourites including Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. Streep will play the wicked witch, while Depp is set to play the big bad wolf from ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. Other cast members include Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Pine as her prince, and Christine Baranski as Cinderella’s wicked stepmother.
Lapine will adapt the script based on his musical, while Chicago‘s David Krane is due to arrange the music, supervised by producer John DeLuca.
